Is it still a legend if I saw it?

A full moon showing through the clouds

Sorry to end the last post on an ominous cliffhanger. I seriously didn’t mean to! I just figured nobody wanted to hear a stranger talk about their first brush with the supernatural, but I got a couple twitter DMs that made me think at least a couple people are curious. So here we go.

I saw my werewolf almost ten years ago, in late September 2011. I’d gone to visit my sister in Portland, where she’d recently moved in with her boyfriend. We were on a walk after dinner. It was around half past seven, twilight, and we were just passing an old community church at the edge of the neighborhood.

My sister saw it first. “Look at that dog!” This was not a rare thing for my sister to shout—she loved dogs. I looked up, expecting to see a tiny poodle or a smiling golden retriever tugging along its person. But there it was, all alone. No owner, no trailing leash. It was just standing there, like it was waiting for something.

I had the strangest feeling that it was waiting for me.

And it became clear very quickly that it wasn’t a dog, either. It had the ears and the muzzle of a dog--I think that’s what made my sister clock it like that. But wasn’t. I looked it in the eye and I just…knew it wasn’t a normal creature. Not an animal and not a person. There isn’t any other way to describe it. It reminded me of descriptions I’ve since read about the “not deer” while lurking on crytpid forums—creatures that look and behave just like deer, until they don’t.

I know people will ask why I didn’t take a picture, but this was back in 2011, so my cellphone’s camera wasn’t very good, and I barely used it. It didn’t even occur to me.

As the three of us watched, frozen, the creature sniffed at the ground, looked at us, and tipped its head to the side, as if considering its next move.

Something it saw must have made it decide we weren’t worth it, because it turned, stood up on two legs and walked around the side of the church.

We stood there for a long time, staring after it.

We went back to my sister’s house and we didn’t really talk about it.  We all knew what we saw, but I guess we all just had this fear…that we saw something the others didn’t. Nobody wanted to be the one to bring up the idea of a werewolf.

But nothing else could make a shadow like that. I couldn’t sleep, I’ve barely been able to eat. That I could be here, thousands of miles away and across a literal ocean...and it’s still here. I almost feel like it’s followed me.

Anyway, that’s why I stayed up and wrote the first post on this blog. So now you know. And I want to ask if anyone has had any similar experiences. If you want to talk about them, my DMs are open.

Innistrad: Midnight Hunt

Darkness approaches Innistrad. Nights are getting longer and werewolves are on the prowl.

Humans and warlocks of Innistrad are trying to ward off the danger and restore balance across Innistrad with a ritual performed at the Harvesttide Festival. But, will this be enough?
